Winter Carnival, 2006 : Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech is one of the longer running winter carnivals in the nation. One of the specialties at Michigan Tech is massive, intricately detailed, snow statues. This year's theme was Cartoon Art for the Young at Heart. The Delta Sigs won first place honors this year in the major statues competition. You'll see, though, that there were many other worthy entries. In addition to the major statues, there are also a number of One-Nighters, constructed beginning at the end of the day, the Wednesday evening before judging.

All of these images are copyright 2006, Bill Fink Communications, LLC. They may be downloaded free of charge for private, non-commercial use. The free downloads are restricted in their file size, that's why the displayed images are only in the Medium size. Most images in this series are at a 2 or 3 megapixel resolution. Full size files may be purchased from us for $25.00 each, again for private, non-commercial use. Excellent printing services are available here at SmugMug; prints ordered through this site will use the full size file images.

Note that by adjusting the "Style" options, above, you can have the selection of pictures play as a slide show.

Heikinpaiva 2007 : Heikinpaiva is a Finnish heritage celebration of mid-winter. In folklore, it is the time when the hibernating bear rolls over, marking the halfway point of its winter slumber. Hancock, Mich., with its strong Finnish roots, has been celebrating this time for a number of years. The celebration is rapidly spreading throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula. There was a parade, a "tori" or market (indoors at this time of year), banquets, classes, and many other celebrations of winter. The TalviTohinat cross country ski race, featured in another gallery here at GalleryOnDaLine.com, was part of the overall mid-winter celebration.

Winter has been largely benign thus far, so this particular mid-winter celebration has seemed more like it marks winter finally getting underway.
