Children of the Keweenaw Highlights : The original opera, "The Children of the Keweenaw," music by Paul Seitz, libretto by Kathleen Harris, was premiered in the Calumet Theatre, Calumet, Michigan in July, 2001. The story focuses on the life of "Big Annie" Clemenc, a labor activist in the Keweenaw during the early part of the 20th Century, and the events around the Italian Hall Disaster of Christmas Eve, 1913. During a Christmas party, someone shouted "fire" in the crowded second floor hall. There was no fire, but the ensuing stampede for the exits led to the deaths of about 70 people, most of them children. This gallery contains a number of rehearsal photos from this first, and thus far only, production of "The Children of the Keweenaw."

MTU Choir China Tour 2006 : From late July to mid August, 2006, the Michigan Tech Concert Choir toured China. The Choir performed in Beijing, Xian, Guilin, Nanjing and Shanghai. The concert bill was a wonderful mix of American music, intended to be one more nail in the bridge of friendship between our two cultures.

Here is a selection of pictures from the tour, showing a few of the highlights of the sights we saw, along with our various concert venues and views of the group hard at work -- singing and touring.

You may view these pictures as a slide show by clicking the button, above right. These images may be downloaded for you personal use. High quality prints can be ordered through this website as well. We've added $.01 to the price of each print for tracking purposes.

Messiah Sing-a-long, 2006 : Members of the Michigan Tech Concert Choir and the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, under the conducting of Dr. Milt Olsson, MTU, led the public in the sixth annual Messiah Sing-a-long at the Calumet Theatre. The event took place Tuesday evening, December 5, 2006.

A special highlight of the evening came when the Theatre's executive director, Jim Lowell, presented the prestigious John Cuddihy award to Dr. Olsson, in recognition of his many years of bringing fine music to the Keweenaw.

For many students in the choir and orchestra, this was their first introduction to the historic Calumet Theatre, built in the early 1900s. Additional musical scores are loaned to members of the audience for their use during the performance.

2007 Keweenaw Folk Festival : The 2007 Keweenaw Folk Festival was held at the Calumet Theatre on February 2, 2007. One of the traditions of this folk festival appears to be a strong snowstorm the evening of the show, and this year was no exception. Despite the weather, a good crowd came out and enjoyed a wonderful evening of music.

Performers, in order of appearance and as seen here, were: Mike Labeau (guitar); Johnny Perona and Randy Seppala (spoons, bones, squeeze-box); Matt Watroba (guitar); Claudia Schmidt (dulcimer and guitar); and the four-person ensemble, Greensky Bluegrass.

White Water & Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra : On February 17, 2007, the family folk band, White Water, combined talents with the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts at Michigan Technological University.

Hailing from Amasa, Mich, about 50 miles south of Houghton, the Premo family (Bette, Dean, Laurel and Evan)have kept alive traditional folk music, adapted and adopted more contemporary folk music of the Great Lakes, and composed their own memorable works as well. Visit their site (www.white-water-associates.com)for a more extensive introduction. Over the last decade and a half, their performances have given those of us who love their music the chance to watch Evan and Laurel grow up before our eyes.

The Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Milton Olsson, is one of the premiere small town orchestras in America. Few communities the size of Houghton can support a symphony orchestra, but we are proud we do.

The evening started with the orchestra's performance of the informal U.P. "national anthem," "Finlandia" by Jean Sibelius. White Water, supported by the orchestra, performed such U.P. favorites as "Keweenaw Light" and "Windigo." A number of individual pieces followed. Evan was solo bassist for a piece with the orchestra, and then Evan took the baton to lead the orchestra in a piece he and Laurel wrote, "Woodsmoke on the Wind," with Laurel on the banjo. A few more joint pieces and this magical evening was complete.
