The original opera, "The Children of the Keweenaw," music by Paul Seitz, libretto by Kathleen Harris, was premiered in the Calumet Theatre, Calumet, Michigan in July, 2001. The story focuses on the life of "Big Annie" Clemenc, a labor activist in the Keweenaw during the early part of the 20th Century, and the events around the Italian Hall Disaster of Christmas Eve, 1913. During a Christmas party, someone shouted "fire" in the crowded second floor hall. There was no fire, but the ensuing stampede for the exits led to the deaths of about 70 people, most of them children. This gallery contains a number of rehearsal photos from this first, and thus far only, production of "The Children of the Keweenaw."
