The National Park Service vessel, Ranger III, is the lifeline for Isle Royale National Park. It is the highway system, the food and diesel fuel transporter, and the most luxurious surface transport to and from the park.
At 165 feet long, it is the largest piece of movable equipment in the National Park System.
The Ranger celebrated its 50th year in 2008. Here are a variety of views of the Ranger III in action. Some are straight photos; some have been edited to mimic a colored pencil drawing.
