2008 Sr. Nationals Sit Ski Sprints (Jan. 4) : (Note: this is one of six galleries of pictures for the entire week; go up one level, to "Sports" to locate the others.) The 2008 US National Cross Country Ski Championships were held at the Michigan Tech Nordic Trails in early January. Here are competition shots of the sit ski sprint competition on Friday, Jan 4. The race included a pursuit heat -- after the first heat, startiing times for the second heat were established to make it more likely that all the racers would near the finish at the same time. Many of the jobs are not too glamorous, but they are all very important! The cameraderie of so many people from the Keweenaw community pulling together to pull off a national championship, right here in our own backyard, is a rare treat. 2007 Great Bear Chase : The 2007 Great Bear Chase cross country ski race was held at the Swedetown Trails near Calumet, Mich. on Sunday, March 11. The pictures in this gallery feature the pre-race registration; CLK Rotary's Saturday night spaghetti supper; Sunday morning race preps in historic downtown Calumet; the three starts, as seen from near the entrance road to the Swedetown Chalet; extensive coverage at the finish area; and finally the closing lunch at the high school. The pictures are posted in chronological order. Turns out that while I got my own clocks set right, my camera clock was overlooked, so Sunday's photo times are an hour off (slow). If you know what time you finished, you should be able to narrow down your search. I got most racers, but not all -- sorry if I missed you! You may view the whole kit and kaboodle very nicely by using the slide show function, above right. 2007 Talvi Tohinat Ski Race : The Keweenaw community has organized the Talvi Tohinat (a "winter scramble") ski race as a part of the greater Heikinpaiva celebration. The race was held at the Michigan Tech trails on Saturday, January 20. It featured a 5K and 10K classic race, a kids' race and a ski-joring with dogs event. Pictures in this gallery are being offered for sale as an additional fund raising benefit for the Keweenaw Land Trust, the beneficiary of the event. Bill Fink Communications, LLC will donate 20% of the proceeds from print and download sales to the KLT. You may view the pictures at no charge. 2007 Senior Nationals : The 2007 National Cross Country Skiing Championships, sanctioned by USSA, were held at the Michigan Tech Nordic Training Center during the first week of January, 2007. Pictures in this gallery highlight the work of staff and volunteers in preparing for and conducting the event, along with highlights of the competition. 2007 Senior Nationals -- Sprints : This gallery features race pictures from the individual and team sprints at the 2007 U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships in Houghton, Michigan, on Saturday and Sunday, January 6 and 7. To view a gallery featuring the hard work of the race staff and volunteers, the general operation of the event, and the final awards ceremony, go to: http://billfink.smugmug.com/gallery/2299886. A number of sequence shots are in here, especially at the lower turn of the course. To best appreciate them, activate the "slide show" function in the upper right. The pictures are in chronological order. (Well, mostly chronological -- seems that some pictures in a sequence are slightly out of sequence because the time stamp only goes down to whole seconds.) You may see the entire set of photos in the gallery by changing the "style" above to "all thumbs." This helps to quickly scan what is available. If you set the "style" to "smugmug" you should have a screen with 15 thumbnails (3 across and 5 down) and one medium picture beside them. You'll see above the thumbnails a listing of "gallery pages." 2006 Great Bearchase : The Great Bearchase cross-country ski race was held March 12, 2006 at the Swedetown Trails in Calumet, Michigan. There are a little less than 800 photos from the event here in this gallery. Search through, and you are likely to find a picture of yourself or a friend in here somewhere. The pictures appear largely in chronological order. I was at the 16k/40k aid station taking most of the individual pics, so if you recall when you came by there, that may help narrow your search. If you have a high speed connection, you might enjoy changing the "Style" (above right) to "All Thumbs." 2008 Talvi Tohinat : The 2008 Talvi Tohinat ski race was held on Saturday, January 19, at the Michigan Tech Nordic Training Center. The races included a youth race, 5 and 10 km adult races, and a ski-jor with one or two dogs. The weather was good Keweenaw -- snow and temps around zero (F)! The race is a fundraiser for the Keweenaw Land Trust (www.keweenawlandtrust.org), an organization devoted to protecting important pieces of land for the good of the greater Keweenaw community. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of prints and downloads through this site will be donated to the KLT. Ski Tigers 08 : The Copper Country Ski Tigers are a community based effort to promote cross-country ski skills for young people in our community. From the youngest age groups to high school, the Ski Tigers program promotes increasing skiing competence and confidence, sometimes leading to participation in cross country ski racing at the college level. The groups meet every Saturday throughout the ski season. Viewing pictures in this gallery is for free. You might enjoy them most by selecting the "slide show" feature in the upper right. Sponsored by the Copper Country Ski Tigers, the race drew competitors ranging in age from 16 down to 2 years old! A portion of the proceeds from the sale of prints, downloads and photo products from this Gallery will be returned to the Ski Tigers. High quality prints, using the original-sized images, are available through this site. Viewing is free; you might enjoy viewing the pictures as a slide show, by clicking on the button in the above right of your screen. The pictures appear chronologically.
